Nine Queens (2000)

Nine Queens (IMDB) is not the usual con movie. It revolves around two con artists who just met. They get a chance to make big money and hence lay out a perfect con. Or not.

Give this Spanish movie a go and you will not regret it.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)

Perfume (IMDB) is a Tom Tykwer(Run Lola Run) film. Its the story of a special boy who is out to make the best perfume in the world. A perfume that would make you feel like you are in heaven. This movie is a best example of a perfect narrative. Ben Whishaw lives upto his reputation of being the best actor of his generation. If you haven't watched this yet, I suggest you do it now.

Classic Vault: Network {1976}

What can I say about Network(IMDB)? This to me is a perfect movie made 30 years too soon. The makers of this movie Sidney Lumet and Paddy Chayefsky are people worthy of worship. Get a backstage pass into what goes on at a TV network and how the use every opportunity to exploit anything to get a good show/rating.

Bronson (2008)

Bronson (IMDB) is a Nicolas Winding Refn film. He is one of my favorite directors, especially after watching Drive. The movie is about the most violent prisoner in UK. There is a lot more to the movie than that. I will not be giving any spoilers here.

Tom Hardy is at his best in the movie. I can't imagine anyone else even getting close to what he pulled off in this movie. Another must watch.

Intouchables(2011)

Intouchables(IMDB) is based on a true story about a quadriplegic aristocrat hiring a guy from the projects as a caretaker. People from two sides of the coin are put together to form a beautiful story. Omar Sy and Francais Cluzet have brought to life the characters they played. Several awards and nominations for the actors prove the worth of the movie.

God Bless America(2011) / It's Kind of a Funny Story(2010)

God Bless America(IMDB) is a story about an frustrated middle-aged man losing it. And when I say losing it, I mean LOSING IT! He is joined by a teenage girl going through some issues herself. The simple concept: kill everyone who deserves to die.

Joel Murray has given an amazing performance. Fun story and good direction. Watch this movie if you haven't already. Let me know in the comments below what you liked and did not like about this movie.

Iron Sky

The Nazis set up a base on the moon by the end of World War II. And what are they doing up there? Yes, they still want to take over the world. So, they built a super death start kind of battleship called the Götterdämmerung. But, they don't have a reliable power source to get it running. A mission to the moon by the USA gives them a chance to get the Götterdämmerung up and running. An invasion is launched in 2018 amidst some political drama.

Iron Sky (IMDB) is a fun movie and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Good comedy, great special effects and decent acting makes this a must watch.

Rubber(2010)

If Garden stage(blog link) will keep a smile on your face through the movie, this one will have you draw question marks in the air throughout. This movie will take you on a journey that is less traveled upon and more where the fuck is this going. Rubber(IMDB) is a movie about a tire that has psychic powers. Yes, it does sound a little far fetched, but, the reason I like this movie is the fact that director Quentin Dupieux just shows all of us that a tire can do an actor's job. And I think that is why it got so many bad reviews(especially at Cannes). I say, give this movie a chance since its been told really well. Good camera work, decent production design, decent acting and and some great direction automatically earns a spot on my list of good movies.

Here is the trailer.

Up next: A Nazi invasion in the future? From above?

I'm back with Garden State(2004)

Alright. I have decided to give my blog one last chance. Henceforth, I will be posting info on movies that are not really mainstream or movies you might not have heard of but are gonna be a treat to watch. Maybe an odd new mainstream movie if it actually deserves a post.

Lets start off the new cycle with a movie called Garden State(IMDB). Starring, written and directed by Zach Braff. If you feel like you have heard his name before, you've watched the TV show called Scrubs. I always had a feeling he was a good actor but, he impressed me with his directorial skills in this movie. And I personally believe its a tough job to act and direct at the same time. If it weren't, we would have had at least 50 Jack Black movies by now, no kidding. The movie is about a troubled young man who goes back home after several years for his mother's funeral. He meets people from his past and some new. A nicely told story with a great background score and beautiful cinematography. Natalie Portman as always has done a great job in this movie too. Yeah, yeah I know you are thinking of the crazy laugh, But no, no crazy laughs in this movie. Peter Sarsgaard also plays a good part in the movie. All in all, when you watch this movie, you have a smile on your face (most of the time). And I like movies that do that. Go ahead and watch it and post your thoughts in the comments.

Up next: A movie about a tire? A tire with psychic powers? wtf?
